Initially, there are only five playable factions: England, France, Spain, The Holy Roman Empire, and Venice. The timeline of the game stretches from the middle of William I’s reign (1080 AD) until the middle of the 16 Century (1530 AD), encompassing the discovery and subsequent conquest of the New World. Like its predecessor, the game combines turn-based strategy and real-time tactical elements, including a mixture of European medieval economic, military and religious gameplay aspects, with an overall goal of ending the game with the largest, wealthiest and most successful empire. Medieval II: Total War is the second medieval-era based strategy game in the Total War franchise from The Creative Assembly, and is the indirect sequel to the original Medieval: Total War.
